Mike hosted the August Film Club meet up having selected Documentary as his category. Admittedly, at the end of the season, the category choices were slim pickings, with ‘Musicals’ and ‘Female Directors’ being gently pushed back into the sacred scrote.
Mike’s film choice was ARGO. Directed by Ben Affleck, and winning the Oscar for Best Film in 2013, Argo tells the gripping true story of a daring CIA mission during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. When six American diplomats escape the besieged U.S. embassy in Tehran, they must be smuggled out under the guise of a fake Hollywood sci-fi film production.
Mike made a worthy attempt to sell this film as a “Docu-drama” which he felt met the brief, claiming it was more respectful to the club than a pure Documentary. There was much after film chat about whether this really could be a documentay - having said that though the scores were favourable.
The nibbles provided were authentically Persian, with homemade falafels, pitta, hummus and lamb kofte with aptly paired wines (Gewürztraminer and a chilled Pinot Noir) to match the cuisine.
