Derek Jarman WTF. I have not seen a film by Derek Jarman (he filmed The Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin) . Now I have. I am not sure I want to see another one! It feels like he was trying to bring Carvaggio's paintings into life by making as many film set pieces as he could. He spent seven years rasing funds to make the film. During that time he also rewrote the script 17 times! The cinematogoraphy is amazing - see comaprison of a couple of his film stills vs his paintings below. Tilda Swinton (her first acting role) and Sean Bean are both playing Carvaggio's models for his painting (and his lovers!).
Ian had a difficult choice - respect the club and give us something we asked for - or choose a director that we all know and love (Quentin) that has nothing new to show us because we have seen all his films anyway. However, the film was thoroughly researched and well presented but that does not necceasrily make it enjoyable. This is what the club is all about - we won't know we like something unless we try it!
Very fair summary Nick. And I wish I had you IT skills...I wanted to show the cinema version of the paintings but don't have to skills
