Who has not seen Casablanca? There are so many well known quotes and scenes from the film that you feel like you have seen it even when you have not actually sat all the way through from beginning to end.

  • "Play it, Sam. ... Note: NOT "Play it again Sam"

  • “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.” ...

  • “Here's looking at you kid.” ...

  • “We'll always have Paris” ...

  • “Round up the usual suspects.” ...

  • “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

The film was shot almost entirely in the studio, even the airport scene using model aircraft. Shot in 1942, the picture won best screenplay, motion picture and director - nothing for Bogart or Bregman. Ingrid Bergman was a couple of inches taller than Bogart which meant that in several scenes Bogart had to either stand on blocks or sit on cushions when they were in scenes together.

Simon introduced the film perfectly without any notes! He gained 87% just on the introduction. The food (same old stuff, cheese and meats) was cleverly divided into German cheese board and French cheese board. There was also a bottle of fancy Bourboun with which we were all encouraged to make an Old Fashioned (Bourboun, sugar, ice, bitters and some orange zest). Overall an excellent evening despite the word burner remaining unlit!
