Actor : Vincent Cassel
Vincent Cassel is one of those actors that I recognise but I had no idea of his name until now! He has a very distinctive (could be described as ugly!) face which often suits playing a baddie. He has made a number of french films in the 90's including La Haine for which he gained a Cesar Award. In 2000's he started appearing in films such as Oceans 11 and 12, Jason Bourne and Black Swan. He was married to Monica Bellucci with whom he acted in a number of films in the 90's. For some reason in 2018 he decided but that a younger 21 year old french model suited him better.
The film charts the outlaw odyssey of Jacques Mesrine the legendary French gangster of the 1960s and 1970s who came to be known as French Public Enemy No. 1 and The Man of a Thousand Faces. Infamous for his bravado and outrageously daring prison escapes, Mesrine carried out numerous robberies, kidnappings and murders in a criminal career that spanned continents until he was shot dead in 1979. The film was shot over 9 months in reverse chronological order so that Cassel could gradually loose the extra 20kg he had to put on the play the role of Mesrine in his later days.
The French tone of the evening was set by sampling a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape compared with another just down the road Gigondas - both made with the Syrah and Grenache grapes. In this case the slightly cheaper Gigondas was preferred. All this was accompanied by a range of French cheeses and a Duck Liver pate.
