A psychological thriller - that was JT's chosen category and you couldn't get more psychlogical than Jordan Peele's superb film Get Out. Jordan Peele was awarded best original screenplay at 2018 Oscar's. The film was also nominated for best director, picture and actor all for Jordan's debut film. It is one of only 6 horror films to be nominated for an award - obvioulsy horror films are not very popular at the Academy. The film grossed $255M off a budget of only $4.5M.

Chris and his girlfriend Rose go upstate to visit her parents for the weekend. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

The film was set in Alabama - a region of the US not known for it's wine making - so Jonathan choose two Cabernet Sauvignon from the west coast for us to compare. Both good but I think I prefered the cheaper of the two reds. We had chicken drumsticks as well - I think they were suppose to be covered in crispy batter like KFC! Anyhow the food and wine was OK but no particularly high scores. Similarly the introduction was a bit confusing. Simon thought we were about to watch an anime after the JT's film introduction so not a good start! However, I thought the film was brilliant and an excellent choice for film club. Film scored 71% but with lower scores for food, wine and introduction JT only managed 68% overall.

The after film debate quickly moved away from a discussion of whether we like horror films or not to what right wing media sources we trust and believe in. I remeber a lot of shouting and strong opinions. I asked google for an opinion on the matter - that was a mistake! Loved the debate!
